EXCERPT FROM A MONOLOG BY A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN WHO JUST CALLED INTO WORK SICK FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER A DECADE (& IS FAKING IT) AFTER WAKING FROM A DÉJÀ VU DREAM THAT COULD HAVE BEEN A VAGUE PREMONITION ABOUT TODAY BEING IMPORTANT

I‘ve neither an optimistic nor pessimistic view of success. People’re talented, it’s a fact of twenty-first century life. Everyone I know’s more talented than I am, in some other field. With millions of talented, competitive people struggling about: The law of success ends up being as simple as a body’s place. It’s not as simple as luck; it’s not as happenstance as who you know. Success is a matter of where your body is, in space, at what time. Luck is just how well life works in your favor with the least of effort. Your life’s path is induced by the point on the globe at which you are born. From there it’s a matter of if you realize you can break the pattern. Your life begins, you self appears, truly, only when you realize that… There’s a distant glimmer in the abyss of habits, a flicker of… I’m trying to say, I’m trying to tell you & remind myself that… Life & self begin when you discover you can alter life & self. And until that point you remind fucked in the wend world of circumstance. And even after this revelatory minutiae: It. Is. Hard. The world will work against you, or so it’ll seem, from spotlights to walls. From jobs that take years to realize you can’t work your way up so you quit. To relationships that take years to uncover why it hasn’t worked. And it’s so obvious it hurts. All that time. Every. Small. Sacrifice. Each choice’ll teach you what you can never predict; learnt in retrospect. Success, then, isn’t just talent, in some cases you need none, really. Success becomes, then, in twenty-first century capitalism: The amount which you put yourself out in the world to be seen and… The amount of pure, unconscionable luck that ensues around you. The most talented person in their field can just be in the wrong place. While someone less talented talks tot he right person on accident.  Success is not just ‘who you know’, it’s where you are & how you react. Success is a floating thing; needing to be where unknown when or why. Some see this view as fatalistic, deterministic, hard, unfair. I’d like to think I’m being as objective as seven billion kin. I see our world as a map of choices, paths unmade, ready to beYou are a point in time on the map of the history of the world. Do all you’re able to forge the squiggliest path imaginable.
