Temporary Worker Rides the Subway

Poems from Temporary Worker Rides the Subway, by Mark Wallace

LAWYERS

They LOVED to worry ALL MASTER PLANS,
ALL fear that RISES when MADE into loopholes,
WHITE fears, AMERICAN loopholes, THERE CIGARETTES HAVE
YEARS of OPERATION, spewing only the best UNION TOBACCO.
HE worksburied in every EXPANDED sentence, GAMBLING GOOD away,
each REGION sporting its own ACADEMY legal TEAM.
STANDARD loophole TURNED loophole,
IT fears to find a detail no COMPANY KNEW.

JOHN GUTFREUND

in this JOINT of traders not ANYONE can MATTER.
ONE learns WHAT from the floor LISTENED,
HEADING an ARRAY of TAKEOVER
NEEDS without UNDERSTANDING or TRUST.

GUARDing against UNTANGLED NIGHT
in every UPDATE, each READ NOTE.
the THING to UNDERSTAND is MONEY,
but who can BEAR each LETTER’s EDGED RISK,
FOOTING IT if necessary when warnings SOUNDED HURRY.
from the RECORD, it would APPEAR THEY had
ENOUGH GRIP for GROWTH
in UNREST and REAL NEED.
yet they NEEDED lessons on USING subtlety to TRY
to DEALS—ONE CAME to believe THEY had only ONE single mistaken RESPONSE.

JUNK ACCOMMODATEd MAKEs
INVESTORS sure of CONTROLLING ENDs.
MINUTES matter on the U.S. LINE. BUSINESS
ENDS the RELATIONS ROUTINE of YEARS.

MET by UNDERSTANDing LAWYERs, BANKERs.
EXPERTS REPLIED, ” RESTRUCTINGS !”  YOU
ALL RUNNING, MILLING,
HEARD yourself become AMATEURS of TIME
EMPHASIZED to GO. the GOING
RISK: ANGER replaces THOUGHT.

HENRY KRAVIS

HAPPENings ARE every TUESDAY,
EARs GOT fouled. GET, by
NOON, US ahead of THEM.
in his ROOM ANSWERING THREE phones,
YOU become an OFFICE for US THERE. HE

KNOWs it IS a THINK EVENING.
RETURNED, ARE you, TONIGHT?
or ARE REPORTERs seizing the MORNING?
his VOICE IS full of LAWYERs’ LETTER ASPECTS.
IS NIGHT
ITs COMPANY EMBELLISHed?
SNORT TIMEs that I had CONFIDENCE KNEW?

we want workers who work for working
working we want workers working
workers want working when workers want
whistling while working while working without wages
wages working for workers working
while workers wait, working keeps working
working works while workers want wages
whether workers want whatever, will working wait
works of wonder will wander wildly
wonder why workers want wonder willingly
watch out for watching waiting workers
wanting work whenever wages wage war
workers wanting war will work when wanted
working whether wages will wait
and whether working works for workers
we will wait, oh won’t we workers
worker won’t want this working to end

The phone, as it swallowed increasingly large bits of the room—first a pen and some paper, but very quickly lamps, computers, chairs—talked back at him in his own words, until at last he heard them.
A man has a twin who, as is typical in such situations, tells him to do horrifying things. What the man doesn’t know is that he himself does not exist, that in fact he is nothing more than a projection of the twin. When he finally realizes that he doesn’t exist, he realizes also a perfect revenge. He can now torment the twin, who he believed was tormenting him, with the fact that the twin is not a twin at all.
A woman believes that the one reason poetry has no effect is that many poets prefer their poetry to be unknown, since that allows them to feel superior in peace. By a variety of stratagems, she proves to a poet she knows that he is not a poet, forcing him out of his shell. But this victory turns into a disaster when he shoots several executives at a company where he works. The woman tries to decide how she feels about the incident.
